You Shall Not Put A Stumbling Block Before The Blind

The Torah states, “You shall not put a stumbling block (מִכְשׁוֹל) before the blind” (Lev. 19:14). In addition to its literal meaning, the word “blind” figuratively refers to a person unaware of all the facts and who is therefore made vulnerable.

Someone who misdirects the blind deceives them, and this violates the 9th commandment not to bear false witness (Exod. 20:16; 23:1). Such deception is called genevat da’at (גְּנֵבַת דַעַת), or “stealing the mind,” since it defrauds the other person’s trust. For example, it is common practice for politicians to disclose only what they think others need to know, and therefore they offer incomplete versions of truth for the sake of their own self-serving interests.

Lying to others (or misleading them via doctrines of demons) is a violation, then, of both the commandment not to steal and the commandment not to bear false witness. “The righteous person hates lies” – דְּבַר־שֶׁקֶר יִשְׂנָא צַדִּיק (Prov. 13:5).

This is indeed a very grave matter (pun intended) … For example, many present-day Messianics and Hebrew Roots followers have fallen into the very dangerous trap of rejecting Sha’ul for instance, and naming him an heretic. They in turn teach this doctrine of demons to those just entering the Kingdom who don’t know any better and are extremely vulnerable!

Be very careful brethren, for the times are evil indeed!

1 Tim 6:3 If anyone teaches differently and does not agree to the sound words, those of our Master יהושע Messiah, and to the teaching which is according to reverence,

4 he is puffed up, understanding none at all, but is sick about questionings and verbal battles from which come envy, strife, slander, wicked suspicions,

5 worthless disputes of men of corrupt minds and deprived of the truth, who think that reverence is a means of gain – withdraw from such.

20 O Timotiyos! Watch over that which has been entrusted to you, turning aside from the profane and empty babblings and contradictions of the falsely called ‘knowledge,’

21 which some, having professed it, have missed the goal concerning the belief. Favour be with you. Amĕn.
